Comprised of cellists Amahl Arulanandam and Bryan Holt\, CBC Music calls VC2 “a tight unit\, with excellent intonation and expression.” They present artistically challenging\, yet accessible programs in venues ranging from intimate cabarets to Roy Thomson Hall. \nAs respected cellists\, they have performed as part of leading music organizations in the city of Toronto including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra\, National Ballet of Canada Orchestra\, Art of Time Ensemble\, Continuum Contemporary Music\, New Music Concerts\, Thin Edge New Music Collective\, Tapestry Opera\, Soundstreams\, Against the Grain Theatre and others. VC2 are alumni of touring organizations Debut Atlantic (2017-18) and Prairie Debut (2019/20). \n \nCommitted to the creation of new works by living composers\, especially those from their home country of Canada\, VC2 commissioned five Canadian composers to create works based on the Beethoven Cello Sonatas project. VC2 recorded these works and in the fall of 2018 released their debut album Beethoven’s Cellists which CBC Radio dubbed a “first-rate” recording. VC2’s most recent release\, I and Thou\, features works by Canadian composers and guest instrumentalists who were highly influential to the duo and their development. They have subsequently kept in touch\, and they last performed in Guelph together in 2022. In their performance practice Matt improvises on the cello\, sometimes employing looping and other pedals\, while Lisa takes the unprocessed cello sounds and manipulates them with her computer. As Matt describes it “I had never improvised in a situation before where I was\, in effect\, relinquishing control of my timbre. In Lisa’s capable hands\, certain cello sounds flew around the room\, broke into shards\, or stretched like molten glass. Occasionally\, a phrase I played five minutes earlier returned wearing an auditory disguise.” \nTime’s Ripples – Marilyn Lerner/Matt Brubeck\nMaster musician improvisors Marilyn Lerner and Matt Brubeck have been performing together since 2007\, mostly as the Ugly Beauties trio with drummer Nick Fraser. They’ve established a new duo and now have a recording in the works. In the music of this programme are compositions with elements of jazz and contemporary chamber music. Delicate\, intimate and exposed\, theirs are songs of the heart. \n \nMatt Brubeck \nMatt Brubeck is a JUNO award -winning performer/composer/educator specializing in improvisation on the cello. Raised on jazz and classically trained at Yale\, Matt is at ease in multiple genres and has taken his cello improvisation skills into diverse musical territories. Matt has collaborated with more artists than he can remember\, including Marilyn Lerner\, Nick Fraser\, Kevin Breit\, Caylie Staples\, and David Braid. In addition to his jazz/improvising work\, Matt has had many eclectic musical adventures including touring and/or recording with Tom Waits\, Sheryl Crow\, Dixie Chicks\, Natalie McMaster\, and Yo-Yo Ma. \nhttps://www.mattbrubeck.com \n \nLisa Conway\nLisa Conway is a sonic adventurer\, songwriter\, composer\, researcher\, recordist\, and mixer based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Her work is often minimalist\, and blends analog synthesizers\, tape machines\, and electronics with acoustic instruments. Lisa is an alumni of the final Red Bull Music Academy (Berlin 2018)\, and the Canadian Film Centre’s Slaight Music Residency. She has received press from publications like Musicworks (cover fall 2025)\, The Fader\, the CBC\, BOMB Magazine\, Exclaim\, and Earmilk\, and has collaborated on works presented at TIFF\, the D’Haus (Dusseldorf)\, MaerzMusik (Berlin)\, The Harbourfront Centre\, Hot Docs\, and the Inside Out Festival. A graduate of the MA in Sonic Arts from Queen’s University Belfast\, she is currently pursuing a SSHRC-funded Individualized PhD in Fine Arts (sound studies) at Concordia University. \nhttps://www.lconofficial.com/ \nMarilyn Lerner\nInternationally renowned composer pianist Marilyn Lerner is a prolific recording artist and performer.  Her work\, always utterly recognizable\, is a singular expression of her passion and deep commitment to a lifelong study of modern jazz\, creative improvisation and klezmer. Marilyn has produced over 25 recordings. Highlights include Birds Are Returning/Marilyn Lerner in Cuba\, (featuring Dafnis Prieto\, Jane Bunnett and Yosvany Terry)\, Special Angel with Sonny Greenwich\, Luminance\, (experimental solo piano) and Romanian Fantasy\, (interpretations of Ashkenazi klezmer and folk tunes).  \n \nOngoing jazz/improvised projects include the Lerner/Brubeck duo\, Ugly Beauties (with Nick Fraser and Matt Brubeck)\, Lerner/Filiano/ Grassi\, and Brass Knuckle Sandwich with trumpeter Nicole Rampersaud\, and the duo Queen Mab\, with clarinettist Lori Freedman. \nLerner is also active in the New York Klezmer revival scene\, teaching and performing at Yiddish New York and KlezKanada.  In 2025 Marilyn was recently awarded the Ontario Arts Foundation’s prestigious Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award for Keyboard Artistry.

As a solo artist\, Jensen has developed a distinctive compositional approach\, improvising and layering her cello through shifting loops and a chain of electronic effects to open out and explore a series of rich\, drone-based sound fields. Pulsing\, visceral and full of color\, her work is deeply immersive\, marked by a wonderful sense of restraint and an almost hallucinatory clarity. Meditative yet with a sculptural sharpness and rigor that sets it apart from the swathe of New Age / DIY droners\, she has forged a very elegant and precise vision. \nHer music has been described by Self-Titled as “heavily processed\, incredibly powerful neo-classical pieces that seem to come straight from another astral plane”; by Boomkat as “languorously void-touching ideas\, scaling and sustaining a sublime tension”; whilst Bandcamp remarked upon “a kaleidoscope of pulsing movement rich in acoustic beating and charged with other psychoacoustic effects\, constantly shifting in density and viscous timbre.” \nJensen’s striking debut album For This From That Will Be Filled was released in April 2018 on the Berlin-based label Miasmah and followed in September 2019 with the “Drone Studies” EP\, a cassette release via Geographic North. Signing to FatCat’s 130701 imprint (Max Richter\, Jóhann Jóhannsson\, Hauschka\, Dustin O’Halloran\, etc.) in late summer 2019\, her sophomore album The experience of repetition as death was released April 2020. Naming it among the top 50 albums of 2020\, NPR remarked “This collection of requiems for a dying mother ranks among the great ambient albums of the 21st century.” Her latest album Esthesis was released in October 2022 and NPR ranked it among the Best Experimental Albums of the Year. Boomkat stated\, “Jensen finds a fine line between in-the-moment\, tactile precision and lingering hallucinatory afterimages that emerge from her improv/compositional system. The pieces betray an exquisite depth of feeling in Jensen’s diffractive rendering of shimmering layers and gently transitory movements\,” with Magnetic Magazine reporting\, “There is no doubt this album will impact people profoundly.” \nJensen’s latest album\, In holiday clothing\, out of the great darkness\, was released on FatCat’s 130701 imprint in October 2025. Jensen recorded it as part of the Visiting Artist Programme at Studio Richter Mahr\, the creative space co-founded by Yulia Mahr and Max Richter in Oxfordshire\, England. It draws abstract inspiration from the Suites of JS Bach\, placing the rich sonority of the cello at the fore but carefully treating and layering the timbres to create a “kaleidoscopic\, surging cathedral of sound” as described by NPR‘s Tom Huizenga. The album was named as one of NPR‘s 12 best albums of 2025\, across all genres. \nClarice Jensen’s music is a natural fit for film and she is increasingly in demand as a film and television composer. Her recent scores include Amber Sealey’s No Man of God starring Elijah Wood which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival; Takeshi Fukunaga’s Ainu Mosir\, which premiered at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival; Fernanda Valadez’s 2020 Sundance Film Festival award-winner Sin Señas Particulares (Identifying Features)\, for which Jensen was nominated for a 2021 Ariel Award for Best Original Music by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences; Caught in the Web: The Murders Behind Zona Divas (2024)\, a four-part Netflix documentary on femicide in Mexico from Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez; and A Want in Her\, a documentary film from Myrid Carten which premiered at International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2024. Jensen is currently at work on several new film and television projects\, as well as her next album. \nA versatile collaborator\, Jensen has recorded and performed with a host of stellar artists including My Chemical Romance\, Jóhann Jóhannsson\, Max Richter\, Björk\, Stars of the Lid\, Dustin O’Halloran\, Nico Muhly\, Taylor Swift\, Michael Stipe\, the National and many others. In her role as the artistic director of ACME (the American Contemporary Music Ensemble)\, she has helped bring to life some of the most revered works of modern classical music\, including pieces by Philip Glass\, Steve Reich\, Terry Riley\, Gavin Bryars\, and more.
