FROTAE +
Dan Laughrin, Liberté Anne, Genviève Gauthier, Joe Sorbara

FROTAE is an ensemble of five saxophonist-improvisers whose work combines microtonal composition, collective listening practices, spatialized sound, and improvisation. They have been working as a core unit since 2023 when they began to develop a deeply collaborative musical language rooted in long-term experimentation and collective listening. The ensemble creates immersive listening environments in which the tactile and psychoacoustic properties of the saxophone become physically perceptible to audiences as performances move between the feeling of playground and sacred ceremony.

For this Guelph performance, Liberté Anne will present a reduced version of FROTAE, taking on one of its modular facets in the form of an electroacoustic sound-installation with live performance.

FROTAE member Geneviève Gauthier will perform live, interacting with pieces are drawn from the raw materials on FROTAE’s upcoming album, volume 2, reworked for this new collaborative iteration in a spatialized listening setting by David Psutka (Halocline Trance).

The Montréal-based visitors will also be joined by Guelph’s own Dan Laughrin on guitar and Joe Sorbara on drums and percussion for a set of freely improvised pieces.
