Julia Biłat
Berlin-based, Polish cellist Julia Biłatcreates at the intersection of improvisation, composition, and performance. In her solo work, she expands the instrument through voice, body, and movement, developing intense musical forms in which sound and performative presence become inseparable. She participates in numerous projects crossing jazz, improvised music, classical music, and theater, and tours across Europe, the UK, and Canada with her duo projects. She is a permanent member of Stegreif.Orchester and Camila Nebbia’s The Hanged One. Commissioned by Stegreif.Orchester, Biłat has composed music for several productions, including a recomposition of Hildegard von Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum, performed at the Alte Oper Frankfurt in 2022. This September, Biłat’s new improvisational cello solo album, Selva Oscura, is released on the New York independent record label Relative Pitch Records.
Berlin-based Russian composer and pianist Roman Stolyar has performed in 27 countries collaborating with a number of internationally renowned improvisers, including Dominic Duval, William Parker, Vinny Golya, Thomas Buckner, Weasel Walter, and many others. His improvisational workshops have garnered him an international reputation, and have led to many invitations to create and implement workshops for organizations and universities in the US and Europe. Moved in Germany in 2023, he’s active in Berlin as an improviser and as composer for theater and performative projects.
